More MacBook Pro problems · Feb 19, 05:01 PM by Richard Thompson

The wireless on my Mac has never been 100%, but i decided to live with it instead of wasting two weeks while Apple try to repair it. Wireless is a big part of a laptop however, and for it not to work almost makes it unusable.

The problems I have been having today make it more than almost unusable to definitely unusable.

While using the machine the screen went blank, leaving just the power light glowing. Just a crash I thought (Yes, Macs crash as well, its not only PCs), restart and all will be well.

Restarted to find that it didn’t restart. Black screen, no chimes, no nothing! After leaving the machine for a couple of hours I returned and managed to get the machine to restart.

Everything seemed normal. Ten minuets later the F11 key seemed to have stuck, pressing it didn’t fix the problem and the key was up. This was either an OS problem or faulty keyboard. Restarted to see if was OS glitch, which lead to the same restart problems. After about another hour the machine started again, but this time the F11, return and comma key were all faulty. After more restarts the comma key eventually packed up completely.

Time to take a trip to the local Apple store once more! When arriving at the store I was told that there were no appointments until tomorrow, explaining that I didn’t need to see someone and knew what the problems were they still wouldn’t let me book it in for repair. A task that would have taken the help desk muppet a ten seconds to complete. I now have to make another trip to the store for this faulty, expensive bit of kit! Simply not good enough!

I know that Mac have updated the hardware in the latest MacBook Pros to resolve some of the issues I have had. Seems I was just unfortunate to buy one of the older buggier ones.

Mikes first Kite Loops · Jan 29, 09:39 AM by Richard Thompson

Mike was trying some kite loops with his 16meter Saturday down at Minis Bay. There was no real wind, but the video still shows how much power the kite loop can generate.

I also just purchased a 16meter for myself. New Naish V4, waiting for the post now!!

Camber Sunday (Strong Winds) · Dec 05, 03:32 PM by Richard Thompson

Went to Camber on Sunday to go fly some kites… However, the wind was too strong. That’s why today I purchased myself a nice small Flexifoil for when the winds are a bit too strong for any major kiting.

Take a look at the vid… We managed to have some fun on Mikes mountain board.

MacBook Back · Nov 14, 12:25 PM by Richard Thompson

So I got my MacBook back yesterday. Seems to be better, although still gets hot and I cant connect to the wireless at work. When I say hot, its not as hot as it used to be, and the wireless could be the AP here or software related.

The repair took over two weeks which I wasn’t to impressed about, but they did replace the logic board and top case, so I spose I shouldn’t grumble too much. Then again these things don’t come cheap!

That leads to the question, “What are Apple playing at”? They were always known for they’re high quality machines, seems that they are after the almighty buck these days rather than customer satisfaction. I wouldn’t be having this rant if I was the only one having problems; using computers for a number of years, I know how they can go wrong. However, the amount of complaints I have heard about Apple in recent months is on the increase.

Well thats my two pence…

MacBook Woe · Oct 27, 11:22 AM by Richard Thompson

About three months ago I ordered a MacBook Pro, it arrived the next day and WOW! wasn’t it pretty. Nice big 17” screen great OS and fast.

All was fine until a couple of days in when I noticed that the power button had dropped slightly. I put it down to me not noticing as was hardly noticeable at the time. However, this soon got worse but was something that I had decided to live with.

I then started using the “laptop” for longer periods of time and realised it was getting hot. Not warm, as you would expect a fast thin laptop to get, but HOT! Untouchable hot. Doing some research over the net I found this to be due to bad use of cooling paste between the processors and cooling systems. See here for more details…

Was getting a bit upset by this time with the whole thing and my view of Mac has plummeted. Seeming that the Mac response is that laptops get warm! Not issuing a recall to solve the problem.

So I am ranting! but the most annoying problem developed this week. When using the laptop on a wireless connection I got called away. When returning my wireless connection had dropped. I tried reconnecting to get the dreaded “There was and error joining the AirPort network xxx”. So after fetching a long ethernet lead i searched the internet for fixes and hacks to get my wireless working again.

This resulted in me trying the following:

  1. Removing all wireless settings, including network keys from the key chain

  2. Resetting the power management unit (PMU), which didn’t seem to have any effect!

  3. Replacing all the AppleAirport.kext files in the System > Libary

The guys over at MacFixIt had put together a great tutorial but unfortunately it didn’t work for me.

So I was forced to take the darn thing back to the Mac store to see one of the MacGeniuses and see if they could shed some light on the situation. After going through everything, I have now got to send the thing away for two weeks (14 days) for it to be looked at by Apple.

So to conclude, I have had the thing for two and a half months and have now got to send it away for two weeks. Hopefully I will have my faith in Mac restored when I get it back in a couple of weeks..
